Where’s the best place to watch the sunrise in Cabarita?
Norries Headland, without question. Turn left out of our front door, walk about ten minutes south along the sand, and the boardwalk climbs the headland to a whale-watching platform that looks straight out over open ocean. The light comes up over the water dead ahead, so there is nothing between you and the horizon when the sky turns. In September you get a second show: the humpback migration is in full swing from June to October, and this is the stretch where whales pass close with their calves. Guests staying with us keep coming back up the hill to tell us they saw blows offshore before their coffee had cooled. One honest note: the surf club’s patrol flags do not go up until later in the morning, so a first-light swim is for confident swimmers who stick to a shallow, gentle stretch near the surf club. Where can you get coffee before sunrise in Cabarita?
Fuel Bakehouse on Tweed Coast Road, which unlocks its doors at 5:30am, seven days a week. It is about an eight-minute walk inland from us: head out to Tweed Coast Road and turn towards the village shops at number 39 to 45. It is the only place open early enough to catch a coffee before you climb the headland for the sunrise, which is exactly how a lot of guests use it. The beans are roasted locally, and the counter fills with warm pies, sausage rolls and a grilled menu that has surfers and tradies queuing shoulder to shoulder from first light. Grab a takeaway, walk it back down to the beach, and you have the whole ritual in one hit. Regulars tell us the chorizo and pulled-beef pie is worth the early alarm on its own.
Caba Social: the village’s breakfast table
A few doors along Tweed Coast Road at number 51, Caba Social opens at 6am and has been the locals’ morning table since 2019. From our front door it is roughly a nine-minute walk, an easy flat stroll once you are on the road. This is the family-run cafe that guests describe as the heart of the village: cold-pressed juices, salad bowls, and coffee that carries a loyal following, with plenty of vegetarian and dairy-free choices. Sit down after the headland walk and you land in the middle of Cabarita’s real morning, dog walkers tied up out the front, surfers still in damp boardies, the same faces the staff greet by name. The Beach Cafe: breakfast a minute from your door
Some mornings you do not want to walk anywhere, and that is what The Beach Cafe is for. It sits in our own building at Shop 2, 2 to 6 Pandanus Parade, a minute from the lift, and opens at 7am daily. This is the pick for a slow start: acai bowls stacked with pitaya, mango and coconut, proper coffee, and a seat looking out towards the beachfront you just woke up beside. Because it is on our doorstep, it suits the morning where the sunrise alarm did not win and you would rather ease into the day than chase it. Guests with young kids tell us it is the easiest breakfast of their stay, close enough that nobody has to be fully organised before food arrives. Daylight saving does not begin in New South Wales until early October, so these are true clock times. Aim to be up on Norries Headland fifteen minutes before, while the sky is still colouring.

The boardwalk to the lookout is short but climbs a set of steps, so it does not suit prams, wheelchairs or bikes. Anyone comfortable on stairs manages it easily in a few minutes. Wear proper shoes rather than thongs for the timber steps, especially when they are damp with dew at first light.
